Like deep red, Doug Koenig keeps getting better with age.
Koenig, 43, formerly of Alburtis and now of Hamburg, just won his 15th Bianchi Cup ' far more than any professional shooter in the world.
At the recent European Bianchi Cup handgun shooting tournament held in Phillipsburg, Germany, Koenig shot a perfect score of 1920 and 182 center 'X' hits to win his fifth Euro Bianchi. That, after arriving late to Phillipsburg as a result of travel issues that forced him to shoot each event solo.
Aside from his custom 1911 pistol that's topped with a Leupold scope, Koenig used hand loaded 110 grain, JHP/XTP 38 Special Hornady ammo. Said Koenig in a very Hornady announcement, 'I have to have the best, most accurate ammo and Hornady XTPs are tack drivers.'
The Euro Bianchi Cup consisted of shooting Practical, Barricade, Falling Plates and Moving Target stages, each with 6 shots taken at various distances within strict 6-second time restriction.
The European Bianchi Cup is patterned following your legendary Bianchi Cup located in the United States, that she won 15 times. In fact that win was televised the 2009 Wednesday on the Outdoor Channel's Shooting USA program ' which can be viewed online.
But the European Bianchi isn't Koenig's only win this year. He won his 20th Open Division Masters International Shooting Championship held Aug. 8 at PASA Park in Barry, Illinois, where he shot enough bulls-eyes to garner 582 points for any prefect 300 percent. As a comparison, the 2nd place competitor through with 466 points.
'The Masters tests a shooters precision, long range and action handgunning skills,' as outlined by Neal Emery, Hornady Communications Manager. And as to the Master's win, Koenig said, 'Nothing else tests your abilities just like the Masters. I've been competing with this match since 1988 and winning never gets easier.' It's certain Hornady ammo helped the main cause.
